from the Milwaukee Sentinel Food Section

Brownies:
  • 3/4 cups cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2/3 cup butter or margarine, melted and divided
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (I prefer minis)
Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9 x 13 pan. In a medium bowl, combine cocoa and baking soda. Blend in 1/3 cup of the melted butter. Add water, stir until thick. Stir in sugar, eggs, and remaining butter. Mix until smooth. Add flour, vanilla, and salt, blend completely. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into pan. Bake 35 - 40 minutes. Cool and frost.

Buttercream Frosting:
  • 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 2 2/3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk (approximately)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
In a small bowl, cream butter. Add cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with the milk. Beat to spreading consistency. Blend in vanilla. Spread on cooled brownies.
